Christ, Our Only Theme
by Fred G. Zaspel

“For we do not preach ourselves,
       but Jesus Christ as Lord,
and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.”
                                           2 Corinthians 4:5

Did you ever hear a man preach in such a way as to leave you with the impression that the message he was really trying to get across was, “Look at me! Aren’t you impressed?” Did you ever hear a man preach “Jesus is Lord” in such a way as to leave you with the same impression? There always has been preaching like that, but we must understand immediately that this kind of preaching is a practical denial of the gospel. The whole subject matter of our preaching must be the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. And the whole object of our preaching must be to acquaint people with him and to leave them impressed with him.

All this raises an interesting question. What is the purpose of our church to be? What are we here for? What is it we are to be doing? Scripture answers clearly: we are not in this for ourselves. We are not in this for self-advancement. We are not in this to build a name for ourselves. We are not in this to make people sit up and notice us. No, we are in this to proclaim “Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.” The church is for the purpose of advancing the universal awareness of the supreme Lordship of Christ.

And where do we, the preachers, fit into this picture? Answer, “we are your servants for Jesus’ sake.” We are here to introduce you to the Lord Jesus Christ, the world’s only savior. This is what we are all about.
