Honor Where Honor is Due
by Pastor Fred G. Zaspel

Proverbs 3:9 says, “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops.

The word “honor” translates from a Hebrew word which means “to be heavy, to have weight.” The idea is that when a person has honor or authority he is said to “carry weight” in the community. The command in this verse is that we are to demonstrate that God has “weight” in our lives. We are to honor Him and show that we prize him and value Him above all else.

What is interesting is the way in which we can demonstrate our honor for Him - “with our wealth and with the firstfruits of our crops.” In other words, we show our honor for God by giving to Him of our material and financial possessions. When we give to the Lord’s work we are saying. “God can make better use of this money than I can.” In this way we show him honor and demonstrate the “weight” he carries in our lives.

I have heard older Christians make the observation that while we as individual Christians have more than ever before, the church now has to beg more than ever before! Clearly, something is wrong.

Each year at Christmastime I think of all this, and I wonder what it says about us that we can spend so much so willingly for so many others and yet hold back when the offering plate is passed. Why not in all this extra giving an “extra” gift to God, a thank offering for his grace in sending us his Son?

Our generation of Christians is one that has made much of praising God in song, and that is a good thing, of course. But in a sense singing is easy. And it does not necessarily gauge the genuineness of our hearts. Here is a means of honoring God that just might probe a bit more deeply and reveal how truly we honor God in our hearts. Certainly, a glance at our checkbook would tell us much.
